Cscape 2003

Cscape Dance Company emerged as a result of a previous large scale community project TC choreographed in 2002 called Selling The Wind, where Cornish dancers joined together to devise and perform in Boscastle Harbour.

When the Shops Shut

Choreographer

Told the tales of vanishing villages and the people who live in them. Evocative, charming and funny the show bought these communities to life in a vivid blend of dance, theatre, film, poetry and music,

“When the shops are shut for good, when the shutters come down for the last time, when the final homes are bought up, what happens to communities then? “

The piece provides an amusing glance into the lives of five very distinct characters, and results in moments of recognition of those private thoughts, emotions and unforgotten experiences which lurk somewhere within us all.

Originally created in early 2003 and re-worked in May 2004 on rural tours of Cornwall as the company’s flagship work.

The production harked back to a lost era of the Bal Maidens, where young unmarried female labourers from the age of 8 worked in the mining industries of Cornwall. Heavy loads, heavy bones and long tortuous hours.

“Below was a  powerhouse performance of raw energy and sheer physicality.”
