Paper Mountain 2011

Paper Mountain was a work in progress supported by Danceworks in Sheffield. It went through a series of research and development phases (also involving writing, music and theatrical staging) and previewed as a middle scale dance theatre piece at the Lyceum with a company of six dancers and a musician/composer, incorporating puppetry and film. I also devised and led a series of children’s workshops to accompany the production.

Paper Mountain began in written form, a story I wrote during my first pregnancy, it became with time a full length fairy story centred around a young boy growing up. He too wrote obsessively as a way to process loss and grief; trying to remember and trying to forget. His memories were embedded deep within the walls (and under the floorboards) of the house. His need to find solace created a powerful imaginary world, summoning events and encounters that would eventually lead him to recognise his own bravery and a renewed sense of future.
