Into The Light - Directed by Gary Clarke

July 2017.

Assistant choreographer, dancer and researcher

A spectacular dance piece produced by Yorkshire Dance for Hull UK City of Culture 2017’s week-long LGBT 50 programme. A celebratory centrepiece performed by a huge cast at the Queen Victoria Square accompanied by live original music from the band The Best Of Fiends.

Gary Clarke and TC led workshops across the city meeting dozens of local people, recruiting 42 community dancers to join 8 professionals (a total of 50 performers to match the 50 years) all ages and genders with many coming from the LGBT+ community. The piece looked back at landmark events in LGBT+ history over five decades: from a secret world in which homosexuality was illegal, through to the present day, as thousands of people joined together for this vibrant, family-friendly performance in the open air seen by many thousands of people.
